A new storm is about to affect Maine and a winter storm warning has been posted for the entire state. The storm comes in two waves.
First, a low-pressure system will move from south and west of the region to a position off the New England coastline. At this point the storm will gain intensity and the precipitation will increase.

Maine overview

The snow starts tomorrow morning before sunrise, slowing the Friday morning commute. The snow continues on and off all day and into the first part of the evening. The snow will be heavier and wetter than the past storm so I recommend shoveling more frequently.

The map below is a predicted radar for 3 a.m. I’ll be updating the forecast here and on Twitter @growingwisdom

Portland will be right on the edge of the heaviest snow with more certainly falling north and east of the city. Currently, I would say around 8 inches is a good bet. If the storm develops a bit farther south, it would bring the heavier snow farther south, the opposite is true.

A difference of a few hours and 50 miles in the evolution of this system will make a tremendous difference in the forecast. Notice southern York County will see even less snow.

Behind this system cold arctic air filters into the region. This brings near- or below-zero readings Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings. With the fresh snow cover skiing is going to continue to improve.

The possibility of snow has diminished for Monday, but isn’t entirely gone yet. However, we are still in a very active storm pattern and you should expect quick changes to the forecast. It’s important to listen to the latest forecast because things will change day to day.

The reason for the increase in snow is the jet stream. The winds that carry cold air and storms have shifted enough to bring the threat of snow back to Maine every few days. This doesn’t mean we see a storm all the time, but it’s no longer the cold dry pattern that prevailed much of the month.
