Whether intended or not, Ray Routhier’s Thursday MaineToday Magazine article “Valentine’s Date” lacked any attempt at reflecting the great diversity of Greater Portland.

Even though the couples presented are wonderful folks – I even know one of the couples well – they are all white, middle-class and heterosexual!

Would it have been too difficult to interview one same-sex couple and include them? One couple of color, particularly someone from our wonderful Somali community? One homeless couple?

You get the idea. I hope editors and writers consider these things in future articles.

Because we are much more than the five couples presented in the article, I believe we have a great reason to celebrate who we all are … and show ourselves off!
