A water main broke early Saturday afternoon at 887 Congress St. in Portland.

Michelle Clements, spokeswoman for the Portland Water District, said the break was reported at 12:40 p.m. and crews were on the scene at 1:30 p.m. to repair it.

On Saturday morning, a gas main leak temporarily displaced residents at 585 Congress St.

Shifting ground from the cold causes water mains and gas lines to break and leak, officials noted.
