A Rumford man died Friday after his car hit a utility pole on River Street in downtown Rumford, police said.

Officials aren’t sure why William R. “Bizz” Carignan’s car hit the pole about 4:45 p.m., said Rumford police Sgt. Douglas Maifeld.

Carignan wasn’t wearing a seat belt, Maifeld said, and was pronounced dead at Rumford Hospital. Maifeld said the place where the crash occurred is one where drivers typically don’t go much faster than 20 or 25 mph.

“Something happened which we haven’t yet figured out,” he said.

Maifeld said the collision remains under investigation.
