As a student at Baxter Academy in Portland, I am concerned about the impact of climate change on my future. As a state, we are not keeping up with with solar energy development. With that, we are also losing job opportunities. Even though the prices of these panels have dropped by 50 percent in the last five years, people still aren’t adopting the technology.

I support the “Solar Power for Maine Bill,” which will reduce barriers that limit the ability of the residents of Maine to invest in solar, call for Maine to have 2 percent of its electricity produced by solar by 2021, and give those who do install solar renewable energy credits.

If this bill fails to move forward, nothing will change. We will continue our dependence on fossil fuels while the Earth becomes more and more polluted. However, if we were to pass this bill, we will decrease the amount of dirty energy we use.

If we can get this bill passed, we will bring Maine closer to going solar.
