STANDISH — St. Joseph’s used a nine-run outburst in the top of the second inning to take control early and defeat Bates 14-3 in a non-conference baseball game on Monday.

Scott Betts hit an RBI triple and Max McCoomb had a pair of singles in the second inning for St. Joseph’s.

McCoomb and Brett Barbati went 3 for 5 for the Monks (13-10), as six players recorded multi-hit games.

Brendan Fox was 1 for 3 with a pair of runs scored for Bates, which fell to 6-7.

SOFTBALL

ALBANY SWEEPS MAINE: The Black Bears (12-15, 1-2 America East) fell behind early and lost 5-3 to the Great Danes (15-8, 2-1) in the first game of a doubleheader at Albany, New York.

Maine got a two-run single from Emj Fogel with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning.

The Black Bears lost the second game, 7-3, as Albany used a four-run fifth to break open a 3-3 contest.

USM SWEEPS BATES: The Huskies scored 16 straight runs to defeat the Bobcats 16-3 in the second game (shortened to five innings) completing a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at Lewiston.

Courtney Davis went 3 for 4 with six RBI for USM (13-7), while Emily York went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI.

Amber Kelly picked up the victory for the Huskies, while Brenna Callahan was tagged with the loss for Bates (1-10).

Southern Maine took the first game of the doubleheader, 10-1.

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: The Monks scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Lasers 11-5 in the second game of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Standish.

Danielle Egan got the complete game win for St. Joseph’s (14-4, 6-2), allowing five runs on 11 hits while striking out five.

Kim Jordan was 1 for 3 with a homer as St. Joseph’s won the first game, 6-3.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 7, EMMANUEL 6: The Monks (9-1, 6-0 GNAC) scored four consecutive goals to start the second half as they came from behind to defeat the Saints at Boston.

Mary Leasure was the top scorer for St. Joseph’s with two goals and a pair of assists.

Meghan Fullarton made three saves for the Monks.
