A cold morning with a brisk breeze reminds us that it’s still early April. There were even more sub-zero readings in northern Maine earlier today. Temperatures right now are still only in the upper 30s.

A series of fronts will act as the focal point for small areas of low pressure and associated precipitation through Friday. As New England transitions from the cooler side of these boundaries to the warmer one, temperatures will eventually become seasonable and then finally rise to above seasonable averages during weekend.

You’ll have to have some patience and maybe even see the humor in the foul weather, in order to make it to the nice weekend ahead. I say humor, because there is sleet and snow in the forecast and there will be some accumulation of snow, highest away from the coast.

I don’t think we will see big snow Portland, but there’s likely going to be enough to turn the ground white and even cause a need to shovel the walkway.

Later this evening, I will re-evaluate the situation to see if the threat of snow and sleet is increasing or decreasing.

Frozen precipitation will have a hard time sticking to the roadways, since it’s been above freezing for many hours. If it was 10 degrees colder, I’d be more concerned about the threat for a plowable snow event.

The precipitation moves into the area later this afternoon and evening and continues overnight. On Thursday there will be a lull in the snow and rain before the next round of it comes through overnight Thursday.

On Friday, a final batch of showers will push through. However, this time it’s going to warm quite a bit and winter type precipitation won’t be an issue. After the wet weather ends Friday, it appears we are in for a mild stretch.

The meteogram below is from the GFS model and really paints a great picture of the cold and wet weather the next couple of days and the mild weekend. The GFS has a nice warming trend after Friday and 60F readings are going to be likely next week.

Needless to say, the remaining snow should be gone by this time next week along much of the coast. Get out the rakes!
