A Portland taxi driver who was attacked and robbed early Friday morning is recovering from minor injuries.

The driver picked up a fare at Congress and Walker streets and drove toward the West End, police said.

The passenger, who was in the back seat, started punching the driver and demanding money in the area of Salem Street, police said. The driver jumped from the moving car to escape the attack, and the taxi went off the road and crashed into a fence. The driver suffered minor injuries, police said.

The robber ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The attacker is described as a white man, in his 20s, with a medium build, wearing a dark sweatshirt and blue jeans, police said.
