Biddeford Mayor Alan Casavant announced Thursday that he will seek a third two-year term.

Casavant, a former state representative who was first elected mayor in 2011, said he believes he has more work to do as the city experiences new economic development.

Much of that development, he said, is a direct result of a 2012 City Council decision to buy the downtown property that was home to the Maine Energy Recovery Co. trash-to-energy plant for more than two decades.

Casavant said one of his greatest accomplishments as mayor is supporting economic development after the closure of MERC, including a private investment of $50 million by a developer who plans to transform a former textile mill into a hotel with two restaurants.

“That private investment would never happen if MERC was still here and, in the next two years, I anticipate even more attention and development in the mills and on the former Maine Energy site,” he said.

In Biddeford, the mayor presides over City Council meetings and is chairman of the School Committee. The mayor also makes appointments to most city committees.
