Responding to a report of a possible overturned boat Saturday afternoon, the Coast Guard discovered only a mass of seaweed in the waters off Old Orchard Beach.
Coast Guard officials said the got a call about a possible overturned boat around 3 p.m. , but a vessel dispatched to the area found a large mass of yellowish seaweed. A Coast Guard dispatcher said the color of the seaweed, and angle of the sun and the size of the seaweed mass – it was about 20 feet long – made it reasonable for someone walking on the beach to suspect that it might be the hull of an overturned boat.
