Firefighters from Sanford and a number of surrounding towns spent several hours fighting a fire on River Street early Friday morning.

The fire broke out in a three-story building 43 River St. shortly after 1:30 a.m. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the cause.

The fire, which started on a second-floor porch, woke a neighbor who alerted people in his building before making sure everyone in the burning building got out, said Sanford Fire Capt. Gary Cushing.

The fire burned into the space between the third-floor ceiling and the roof and caused extensive damage to at least one of the building’s six apartments, Cushing said.

Firefighters were concerned about the proximity of the building next door, at 41 River St., and evacuated it as a precaution.

Nobody was hurt.

The Red Cross is helping displaced residents with food, clothing, emotional support and emergency housing, according to spokesman John Lamb.

The organization placed 11 people in a hotel, while a few residents found other places to stay, said Lamb.
