A Sanford woman has been summoned by police for allegedly stealing returnable bottles that were being collected by the Shapleigh Parent-Teacher Association to raise funds for school projects and field trips.

York County Sheriff William L. King Jr. said Tuesday that 23-year-old Jenna Gray of Sanford was summoned on two counts of theft by unauthorized taking.

King said the bottle donation bin is located at the Shapleigh Elementary School. King said his department has been receiving reports of bottle thefts for several months, but it wasn’t until recently that surveillance video caught Gray getting out of a car and removing bottles from the bin.

King said the surveillance video was posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, where several Facebook followers identified the woman as Gray.

Sgt. David Chauvette interviewed Gray at her home, and King said Gray “subsequently confessed, admitting she took approximately $65 worth of bottles from the donation bin on two separate occasions.”
