An inmate who died Monday at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham died of natural causes, state police said Tuesday.

Jeppie Phillips, 51, had served about seven weeks of a nine-month sentence for being a habitual offender when he died at 2:30 a.m. Monday. He was in prison after being sentenced in Sagadahoc Superior Court.

State police were notified along with the Medical Examiner’s office. State police investigated the death.

“No foul play is suspected,” said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police.

Phillips was the second inmate to die in June at the Maine Correctional Center.

Harold Gleason, 67, died of natural causes at Maine Medical Center. He was serving a split 20-year sentence, with all but seven years suspended, for unlawful sexual contact and gross sexual assault. He was scheduled to be released on Nov. 18, 2018.
