I would like to publicly announce how disappointed I am in a few Portland-area lawmakers’ decision to vote against L.D. 883, “An Act to Create the Cellular Telephone Labeling Act.”

Portland Democratic legislators Mark Dion, Richard Farnsworth and Erik Jorgensen and South Portland legislators Terry Morrison, a Democrat, and Kevin Battle, a Republican, are failing to protect and inform citizens of Maine of the potential dangers of cellphone radiation.

They feel cellphone users do not deserve the right to know about the distance separation that cellphone manufactures currently recommend. They have left their constituents at risk by ignoring or dismissing the growing evidence that points to wireless radiation being harmful, especially to children.

Shortly after this bill was killed, I came to learn by way of a Portland Press Herald article that a science teacher at Deering High School started noticing her fish in her fish tank kept dying off in her classroom after the placement of cellular antennas on top of the building (“Cell tower on Deering High roof undergoes tests after fish die in classroom,” June 11).

Maine lawmakers must consider the safety of children, and this topic should be on their minds when they head back in session next fall. After all, children are our future.
