We are the members of the Clergy Association of the Kennebunks: the Rev. Jim Anderson, the Rev. Mark Arbisi, the Rev. Lara Campell, the Rev. Joe Everett, the Rev. James Henry, the Rev. Richard Horner, the Rev. Charity Omartian and the Rev. Charles H. Whiston; Rabbi H. Philip Berkowitz and Rabbi Bill Leffler; the Rev. Dr. Debra Hanson and the Rev. Dr. Ruth Merriam, and Deacon Darrell Blackwell.

We express our deep sadness and extend fervent prayer with the members and friends of the Emanuel AME Church of Charleston, South Carolina, and surrounding community.

Such acts of violence and racism that they have endured tear at the heart of our shared faith traditions and have no place in civilized society.

However our local faith expressions may differ, we stand united in the tears we shed for the innocent who lost theirs lives in their place of worship.

May such deeds only serve to further our resolve of being people of peace in the midst of violence. We join as one with the people of Charleston and far beyond.

The Rev. Charles H. Whiston
