Portland police swarmed City Hall Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of a man behaving erratically who said he was armed with a machete.

Authorities briefly locked the front door to City Hall and kept people from entering the building while police responded with several cruisers.

The call was received at 3:40 p.m. There was no machete seen and police searched the area and did not find one.

The man is well known to police and has mental health problems which is why he was taken to Maine Medical Center for a psychological evaluation. Police did not identify the man.

A number of city employees left the building and waited outside while the scene unfolded, but City Hall was not evacuated.

Nobody was injured.
