The Yarmouth harbormaster’s boat should be back in the water next week after undergoing $25,000 in repairs after hitting a ledge.

Harbormaster Robert Byron had been helping to provide security at Long Island’s lobster boat races Aug. 15 and was racing back in the town’s aluminum boat as a thunderstorm approached. The 22-foot Pacific hit a rock near Lower Basket Ledge, badly damaging the lower unit on the 225-horsepower Honda outboard, said Police Chief Michael Morrill.

The boat’s hull was not signficantly damaged and the motor is covered by insurance, said Town Manager Nat Tupper. Tupper said he was told Byron disconnected his GPS and dropped his radio antenna to reduce the chances of getting hit by lightning.

Harbormasters from Freeport and Falmouth have helped cover the town’s coastline for the two weeks that the boat has been out of service, he said.
