A Brunswick man is facing heroin charges following a traffic stop in Brunswick on Saturday, police say.

George Edward Jones, 39, is charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs and trafficking in prison contraband, according to a news release from Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Maine State Police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency say officers seized more than 500 bags of heroin with a street value of over $10,000. Additionally, Jones was found to be in possession of a small amount of crack cocaine as he was being searched at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.

Jones was scheduled to make his first appearance in Cumberland County Court in Portland on Monday.

The arrest came after Trooper Jodell Wilkinson stopped a blue 2015 Nissan Versa on outer Pleasant Street in Brunswick as it was getting off Interstate 295.

Jones, a passenger, was immediately arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear at the Cumberland County Court in reference to a charge of operating after habitual offender revocation.

A state police dog, Brunswick police officers and MDEA agents searched the car and found a backpack containing heroin, along with hypodermic needles and empty wax paper bags.

MDEA, along with the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and Bath and Brunswick police departments, have been investigating Jones in recent months on suspicion of importing heroin from out of state and reselling the drug in Bath-Brunswick.
