SOUTH BRISTOL — A Lincoln County man has been arrested and charged with nine counts of gross sexual assault, a Class A crime.

Lt. Michael Murphy of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies arrested 38-year-old Brian Merryman of South Bristol on Wednesday.

Merryman is accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old child in Newcastle in 2013.

Merryman was convicted of unlawful sexual contact in 1996 and also was convicted of failure to register as a sex offender and having prohibited contact with a person under the age of 14. After several years on the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Merryman was removed from the Registry in June 2015 as a result of a recent court ruling.

Merryman was also charged Wednesday with failure to appear in court on a warrant for a traffic offense. Merryman is being held without bail at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

It isn’t known whether he’s represented by a lawyer.
