Most residents were able to return to their apartments at 977 Forest Ave. after a car backed into the building and broke a gas line on Tuesday afternoon.

Residents were evacuated from the seven apartments in the complex but returned after Unitil turned off the gas. Nobody was injured.

A sport utility vehicle backed into one apartment about 3:15 p.m., smashing in a wall. A city building inspector was checking that apartment Tuesday.

The American Red Cross of Maine and the building owner were working with a family that was displaced to find alternative housing for the night.
