The Sebago Lake portion of this weekend’s Sebago Lake Rotary Ice Fishing Derby has been canceled because of unsafe ice conditions, event organizers announced Wednesday.
Instead, the contest will be held on smaller lakes and ponds in Cumberland County. The derby is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
The Maine Warden’s Service cautions fishermen to check ice on all waters. Unseasonably warm temperatures have resulted in thinner ice on all lakes and ponds in southern Maine this year, said Warden Service Sgt. Jason Luce.
The Maine Children’s Cancer Program’s Polar Dip on Sebago Lake at Raymond Beach will take place as scheduled at noon Saturday.
The removal of Sebago Lake from the derby eliminates the $150,000 prize for catching a togue that eclipses the state record of 31.8 pounds. Togue from other lakes and ponds in Cumberland County will be accepted and awarded prizes similar to other fish species in the derby.
Other prizes, including a 2016 Polaris ATV, will be drawn at random among entrants. The awards and prizes will be given out at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Windham Weaponry’s Conference Hall at 999 Roosevelt Trail in Windham.
