A heavily traveled section of Main Street in South Portland was closed for several hours Wednesday after a tractor-trailer took down a utility pole.

Main Street was shut down around 11 a.m. between Cash Corner and Rumery Road, causing major traffic delays until the southbound lane reopened at 4:30 p.m. The northbound lane reopened a short time later.

South Portland police said the accident caused power outages in a “broad area” of the city. Everyone’s power had been restored by Wednesday evening. “Our officers will be glad to get out of the street, so drivers can start waving at them with all five fingers again,” the police department wrote on its Facebook page.

Sgt. Kevin Gerrish said the Cash Corner intersection is one of the most congested intersections in the state.

He identified the driver of the truck as Vasyl Tykholiz, 31, of Chicago. The Maine State Police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division is investigating the accident. Gerrish said the driver could be cited.

Police said Tykholiz’ truck took down a utility pole in the median strip at Main Street and Rumery Road. Several wires and traffic lights became entangled with the truck, creating a safety hazard. No injuries were reported.
