Police detonated a smoke grenade discovered by a resident walking along Route 11 in Limington on Saturday morning.
The York County Sheriff’s office said the resident found a suspicious-looking object at about 11:30 a.m., then took it home and called police.
Sheriff Deputy Tom Searway responded to the call and determined the object was a military grade M-18 smoke grenade that looked to have been altered with electrical tape.
Searway recalled the device from his military service and determined it could still be active. He called the Maine State Police bomb squad which detonated the grenade without incident.
Sheriff William King said in a prepared statement that his office appreciates the notification by the resident and recommends that anybody who finds a suspicious-looking object leave it in place and call police to the scene.
