Gov. LePage and U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin have cited the case of a former Freeport resident who died fighting for the Islamic State as evidence that we need to tighten screening for immigrants. Someone ought to tell these two about mathematics.
Using the figures for the number of Somali, Iraqi and Congolese immigrants from the Portland Press Herald, this one “terrorist” represents 0.035 percent (that’s 35 thousandths of 1 percent) of our immigrant population! That is a trivial and insignificant number, not enough to support their statements.
