The Portland Water District will return Wednesday morning to continue repairs after a significant water main break in Gorham that resulted in low water pressure for consumers in several communities, including Portland and South Portland, for part of the day on Tuesday.

Portland Water District spokeswoman Michelle Clements said the break occurred early Tuesday morning in a wooded area in Gorham.

While water pressure was restored to most of the affected customers, some customers on Barstow Road in Gorham still had low water pressure Tuesday evening and a few customers on Allison Lane had no water. The district provided those households with bottled water, Clements said.

Clements said the water main break was detected in a large water line located off Wescott Road in Gorham. The Portland Water District’s equipment started showing abnormal readings in the Gorham water line around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday but it wasn’t until 5 a.m. that the actual break occurred.
