A Lewiston man pleaded guilty Friday to murdering his pregnant girlfriend, WCSH TV reports.

Evaristo Deus, 35, faces up to 45 years in prison when he is sentenced in December following his plea in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

Deus and Laudrinha Kubeloso had dated, but had split up three weeks before Kubeloso was killed, according to court documents filed in the case. She was four months pregnant.

Deus was accused of driving away after striking Kubeloso with his sport utility vehicle as she walked home from her adult education class. At least two men witnessed the hit-and-run.

Deus later tried to flee to Haiti, police say.

Both were described by police as recent asylum seekers from Angola.
