Let me set the record straight on solar energy, as some people are unaware that every solar electric system provides economic and environmental benefits to all Mainers – whether you have solar on your property or not.
If you do have a solar electric system on your property, you can earn credits on your utility account when the array generates excess electricity that is exported to the grid. This situation occurs on hot sunny days when the utility grid is under maximum strain from air conditioning, which is called “peak demand.”
Solar electric systems benefit the grid by reducing peak demand, thereby reducing costs for all Mainers. To assess the costs and benefits of solar to all ratepayers, the Public Utilities Commission conducted an independent study in 2015 which found that solar unquestionably saves far more money than it costs.
Although Maine’s solar industry is dead last in New England after six years of the LePage administration, you can vote pro-solar to create jobs, save money and reduce air pollution.
