There’s been a spike in residential burglaries in South Portland this year, police said.

In a Facebook post Friday, the South Portland Police Department said there have been 75 burglaries in the city for the year-to-date, compared to 45 during the same period last year.

Many are east of the police station on Anthoine Street, in neighborhoods that include Knightville and Mill Creek, the post said. Most of the break-ins are through forced entry or via unlocked doors and windows and take place during the day and early evening, police said.

The department advises that residents lock doors and windows and let a neighbor or police know if the house is going to be vacant for an extended period. People or things that are out of the ordinary in the neighborhood should also be reported, police said.

The post said that police patrols will focus on the problem, but asked that residents report suspicious activity by calling 874-8575.
