A 28-year-old Vinalhaven man died Tuesday from injuries he sustained after crashing his pickup truck.

Patrick Gasperini died at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport after the crash, which occurred at about noon.

Gasperini was driving a 2016 Dodge pickup when he struck a tree and rolled the vehicle.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said Gasperini was conscious and alert when rescue crews arrived at the scene of the crash on the Land Islands Road, but died at the hospital from internal injuries.

Gasperini suffered a medical issue before the crash, Carroll said, based on statements Gasperini made to Deputy Rob Potter at the scene.

Before the crash, witnesses said they saw a black Dodge pickup truck travel past them at a high rate of speed. After passing them, the truck ran head-on into a large tree, rolled about 100 feet, and came to rest in rocks at the bottom of a steep embankment.

The crash is still under investigation.
