READING, Pa. — Jalen Beeks allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings, and Jake DePew singled home the game’s only run in the seventh inning as the Portland Sea Dogs avoided a series sweep against the Reading Fightin Phils with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon.

Beeks (3-1), a 23-year-old left-hander, extended his shutout streak to 14 innings and lowered his ERA to 1.99. He hasn’t allowed a run in three of this four starts.

Beeks struck out four and issued three walks.

Austin Maddox and Jamie Callahan worked the final two innings, with Callahan earning his second save.

Reading starter Shane Watson matched Beeks through five scoreless innings, but the Sea Dogs broke through in the seventh against reliever Joey DeNato (1-1).

Tzu-Wei Lin drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice by Jose Rosario and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a bloop single to left by DePew.

The Sea Dogs finished with 10 hits but left nine runners on base. Cole Sturgeon went 4 for 4 and Aneury Tavarez reached base for the 29th straight game, going 1 for 4 with a walk.
