FALMOUTH — An eighth-grader at Falmouth Middle School has been named one of the 50 finalists nationwide who may soon see their artwork displayed on Google’s popular search website.

Joseph Han was named the state winner of the annual “Doodle 4 Google” contest during a school assembly Wednesday morning. More than 130,000 entries were submitted nationwide, according to Google.

Google doodles feature various styles of original artwork in which the company’s name is spelled out as part of the scene. Han’s doodle is a colorful painting of a boy sitting on the bank of a pond or river with the Google name subtlely spelled out by trees and a footbridge.

The 50 winning doodles will be displayed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. And, along with the winners from the other 49 states, Han has been invited to an awards ceremony at Google’s New York headquarters on May 22.

The national winner, who will be named at the ceremony, will have his or her doodle displayed on the Google homepage on May 23. The winning student also will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.

Google is asking members of the public to vote for their favorite doodles from the 50 state winners to help select five national finalists, including one per grade group.  Voting will be open from May 1 to May 10 on this site.
