OK so fine, Canada beat our pants off at hockey during the Olympics. They also are responsible for Justin Bieber. But other than that, I love all things Canadian. From the unforgettable crystal blue of Lake Louise in Alberta to the old part of Quebec and the lively streets of Montreal, I love Canada. And one of the things I love most is the music.
The list of some of my absolute favorite musicians has many Canadians on it, including Jane Siberry, K.D. Lang, Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan and Cowboy Junkies.

And Cowboy Junkies will be performing at the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield on Friday night. Like many Junkies fans, I fell in love with their 1988 album, “The Trinity Sessions,” from the first a cappella notes of “Mining for Gold,” to their breathtaking rendition of The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” to the original tunes “Misguided Angel” and “To Love is to Bury,” this album has never grown old.
All these years – and albums later – the band still brings it, with Margo Timmins’ seductively delicate yet persuasive vocals, her brother Michael’s guitar, other brother Peter’s drums and Alan Anton’s bass.
They were alt-country before that was even a thing. The band’s infusion of blues, country and rock into their sound sets them apart and has kept their fans interested, myself included.
Then there’s the live show experience. I’ve seen Cowboy Junkies live about a half dozen times. They consistently put on a riveting show that won’t have you dancing in the aisles but will leave you spellbound for the duration.
I can also report that I’ve seen them at Stone Mountain, and the combination of this band in that venue is a force all its own. Tickets are dwindling, so don’t think too long about this.
