In romance, sometimes things just don’t work out.

And sometimes, in an age when reality television makes private moments very public, things don’t work out in front of millions of people.

That’s what happened for Maine’s Ashley Hebert, who was bid adieu by suitor Brad Womack on Monday’s episode of the hit ABC show “The Bachelor.”

At the beginning of Monday’s pre-recorded episode, Hebert was one of three women still in the running for a marriage proposal from Womack, out of 30 who began the season Jan. 3. But by the end of the episode, she was out of contention.

Hebert, 26, is a Madawaska native currently living in Philadelphia and studying dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania. She had been prohibited by ABC from talking about the show while she was still on, and was not available for comment Monday night.

On Monday’s episode, filmed in South Africa, Womack was seen telling Hebert he was taking her on a picnic via helicopter. This made Hebert scream — and not with joy — as she told Womack that flying in a helicopter was her “biggest fear.” But with Womack’s arms around here, she overcame her fear and took the ride.

During the picnic, Womack asked Hebert where she wanted to live in the future. Hebert mentioned southern Maine, but also said she just wanted to live close to people she loves because she feels like she’s “missed out” on a lot while living in Philadelphia and devoting so much time to her dentistry studies.

Later in the date, at dinner, Womack said he was concerned that Hebert didn’t mention Austin, Texas, as a place where she might like to live. That’s where he lives.

“I care about you a lot, and I’m freaking out, I really am, because there is limited time left and I still have questions,” Womack said. “Why are we spending so much time reassuring ourselves instead of just going with it?”

Hebert then got defensive.

“What I feel for you is chemistry and sparks, and I feel like you’re just looking for a wife,” Hebert said.

Later, near the end of the show, Hebert was reduced to tears as she and Womack struggled to explain their feelings for and frustrations with each other. Finally, Womack called Hebert “exceptional” but said that he’d have to say goodbye to her.

Hebert was silent.

“Is that it?” Womack said.

“I’m not going to beg you,” Hebert said.

On last week’s episode, Hebert was seen introducing Womack — a Texas entrepreneur who was on “The Bachelor” once before, in 2007 — to her mother and stepfather, both paper mill workers.

Earlier in the episode, Womack said there had been “some speed bumps” in his short relationship with Hebert. A flashback clip then showed Hebert telling Womack that if he chose her she’d be “so happy,” but that if he didn’t, “I’ll be OK.”

“That makes me wonder where Ashley’s heart is, and it scares me,” Womack said into the camera.

Womack is expected to propose to one of the remaining two women on the season finale March 14. But when he was on “The Bachelor” before, he failed to propose to anyone.
