This year's grants, announced at a luncheon in Freeport, went to 57 organizations.

Hannah Quimby said notable recipients this year include the Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association, which will get $35,000 to turn an abandoned gravel pit in Unity into an apple and pear orchard.

Other recipients are the Beehive Collective Design Collection in Machias, a youth group that develops educational and organizing tools and will get $20,000 to expand its year-round accommodations for volunteers; and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, which will receive about $15,000 to help develop a long-range management plan for the portion of the canoe trail that goes through Maine.

The foundation was started in 2004 by Roxanne Quimby, who co-founded the Burt's Bees personal care products company. She bought thousands of acres of forestland in northern Maine with the goal of creating a national park.
