Adventurer hopes to set record for sail around globe

Stanley Paris hopes to make his solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the globe in 120 days or less.

THOMASTON — Adventurer Stanley Paris today showed off the progress on Kiwi Spirit, the vessel in which he hopes to break the record set by Maine sailor Dodge Morgan for a solo nonstop sail around the globe.

Paris, founder of St. Augustine University in Florida, is having the 63-foot sailboat made at Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding. The boat is currently in three sections – the hull, the deck and the interior. It's being built with high-tech materials, including carbon fiber. It is scheduled to be launched in August.

Paris, 74, hopes to complete his circumnavigation, starting and ending in Bermuda, in 120 days or less. Morgan established his 150-day record in 1986.

Paris, who is in good health, except for high cholesterol, expects he will sleep for no more than 45 minutes at a time during the voyage. The trip will take him through perilous waters, including the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn.

Like Morgan, Paris would not have power assistance on the trip.

Paris is scheduled to begin his trip November 2013.
