ORONO — Matt Mangene's goal 23 seconds into the second period helped the Maine hockey team to a 3-1 win over Providence tonight at Alfond Arena.

The Black Bears killed off two third-period penalties, an elbowing call against Will O'Neill at 7:34 and a tripping call against Adam Shemansky four minutes later, and withstood a 6-on-5 situation in the final minutes of the game after Providence pulled goalie Alex Beaudry in favor of a sixth skater.

Shemansky and Klas Leidermark also scored for Maine, while Damian Cross scored for Providence.

Dan Sullivan made 26 saves for Maine (3-2-1, 3-1 Hockey East), while Alex Beaudry made 25 saves for Providence (2-3-1, 2-2).

Maine plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Boston College, at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
