SOUTH PORTLAND – Four candidates will vie for two at-large seats on the South Portland City Council in the Nov. 5 election, and two more candidates are competing for one spot on the city school board.

City Council and school board candidates had until Monday afternoon to turn in at least 100 verified signatures of active South Portland voters and qualify for the ballot.

The council race will pit incumbent Tom Blake against Richard Matthews of Boothby Avenue, Carol Thorne of Sandy Hill Road and Maxine Beecher of Highland Avenue. The top two finishers will win three-year terms.

City Councilor Alan Livingston chose not to run to retain his at-large seat.

In the race for the District 1 school board seat, Eugene Swiger of Boyd Street is competing against Richard Carter of Thompson Street.

There will be other candidates on the ballot, although those races are not competitive. No one is officially opposing Sara Goldberg of Pine Street for the District 2 School Board seat. Likewise, Mary House of Elderberry Drive is the sole candidate for a school board at-large seat.
