Driver killed when trying to avoid porcupine

ARUNDEL — A 56-year-old Arundel woman was killed when she swerved to avoid a porcpine and hit a utility pole on Route 1.

The York County Sheriff's Office said Linda Binette was driving her 2010 Honda Civic at 5 a.m. and struck a utility pole. Electrical power was knocked out in the area and Route 1, also called the Portland Road, was closed for several hours and remained closed at 10:15 a.m.

Sgt. Anthony Clukey of the Kennebunk Police Department is reconstructing the accident.
