FALMOUTH — The State Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a home at the Falmouth Country Club.
There was no one at home at 18 Birkdale Road when a passerby notified the fire department that smoke was coming from the home’s roof.
Fire crews encountered smoke coming from the back of the house when they arrived shortly after 4 p.m., according to Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr.
Upon entering the home firefighters encountered heavy smoke and zero visibility. Crew also encountered a large hole in the floor just inside the front door.
Rice said the fire burned a hole through the entire center of the two story residence.
No one was at home when the fire broke out. One pet remains unaccounted for.
Birkdale Road had to be closed for two hours.
