PORTLAND – A crew of about 15 firefighters is dealing with a stubborn fire in a pile of construction rubbish at the Riverside Street recycling facility.
The fire was reported shortly after 6 p.m, said Portland Fire Chief Bob Wassick. He said the fire is burning in a pile of rubbish that's about 100 feet long, 50 feet wide and 30 feet high.
"Or at least it was when we got there," Wassick said.
Wassick said firefighters are working with employees of CPRC, which operates the recycling center, to pull the pile apart and then wet down the material that is separated.
He said the process is likely to take until early Sunday morning.
Riverside Street is closed because the firefighters have stretched hoses across the street from the hydrants on the opposite side.
Wassick said no one has been hurt fighting the fire and the cause is unknown.
