Four injured in Maine boating accident

GEORGETOWN — A boating accident in the Sheepscot River left four people injured late Monday night.

The 22-foot center console boat, a popular boating style among recreational anglers, ran aground on Turnip Island, a small rocky island just downriver from MacMahon Island in Georgetown.

Steve Thibodeau Sr., a Georgetown lobsterman, who volunteered his boat to transport rescue workers to the crash site said the boat had left Boothbay Harbor and was headed for MacMahon Island when it ran aground around 7:30 p.m.

Two other local fishermen, Ronnie Pinkham and Brian Kelly, also met Georgetown’s ambulance crews at Five Island dock and transported them to the crash site.

Town rescue workers said all four people on the boat had to be transported to area hospitals, but no one suffered life-threatening injuries. Thibodeau said one person was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Maine Marine Patrol.
