AUGUSTA — A prominent political consultant has been questioned as Maine campaign regulators investigate a website that’s highly critical of independent candidate for governor Eliot Cutler.
Maine Public Radio reports that Dennis Bailey, president of Portland-based Savvy Inc. and consultant for independent candidate Shawn Moody, is being questioned by the state ethics commission in connection with the Cutler Files website. Bailey denies having any knowledge about the site’s creator.
Cutler asked the ethics commission to investigate the site to see if there are any violations of the state’s campaign finance laws.
Republican activist Dan Billings, the attorney representing authors of the website, says his unnamed clients are entitled to First Amendment protections and aren’t covered by campaign finance laws.
