Maine bill would allow bars to open early on St. Pat's Day

AUGUSTA — It's not the most provocative bill to be taken up this year, but it has drawn the attention from bar owners in Maine – and people who take their St. Patrick's Day celebrating seriously.

A bill that the Judiciary Committee will review on Wednesday seeks to add a few hours to the time revelers can buy a drink on that special day.

State law prohibits the sale of liquor on Sunday between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Rep. Barry Hobbins' bill, LD 216, says bars and restaurants would be allowed to serve alcohol starting at 6 a.m. when St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, falls on a Sunday, as it does this year.

Hobbins, a Saco Democrat, says bars stand to lose a lot of money if they can't open early that day.
