Maine Mall BMV branch closes Thursday; new office in Scarborough

Although the mall branch is the second busiest in the state, it's too small and parking is too difficult during the holiday season, officials say.

Staff Report

The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will move its South Portland branch at the Maine Mall to Scarborough.

The South Portland BMV branch will close on Oct. 24 and the new office in Scarborough will open on Monday, Oct. 28, at 8 a.m. at 200 Expedition Drive, Suite G/H in Scarborough.

The current BMV branch at the Maine Mall is the second busiest branch of the 13 statewide. It serves 60,000 customers annually and is considered too small for the number of customers it assists, with a lobby that seats 34. Officials said the parking lot is also inadequate for customers and staff during the holiday seasons.

The new site in Scarborough is 3.5 miles from the South Portland location and accessible from Route 1 and the Maine Turnpike. The office will have 100 on-site parking spaces for customers and nine dedicated parking spaces for road testing and parallel parking. There will be seating for 59 people in the lobby.

Customers are also encouraged to visit the Portland BMV office at 125 Presumpscot St., Unit 4.
