PRESQUE ISLE — Maine’s first state park is holding a celebratory event in recognition of the state park system’s 75th birthday.
A celebration is being held at Aroostook State Park in Presque Isle, which became the first state park after a group of local business owners donated 100 acres of land. Saturday’s event includes dogsled rides, ice-harvesting and ice-sculpting demonstrations and nature hikes.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci last month declared 2010 as “Maine State Parks Year” to commemorate the park system, which was established by the Maine Legislature in 1935.
The Bureau of Parks and Lands is hosting events throughout the year at the state’s parks and historic sites in honor of the anniversary.
