The man, Alan W. Sipe, was taken into custody following the incident around 11:15 a.m. at 359 East River Road, according to police.
Skowhegan Police Chief Michael Emmons said Tara Harrington, 37, also of Cornville, was injured in an assault by Sipe a short time before the shooting, but not from the gunshot.
The call originally came in as a domestic dispute. Emmons said Harrington told police Sipe pushed her down a flight of stairs. She was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital for to be checked for possible wrist injuries.
Emmons said Harrington and two other women, Tiffany Weems, 20, and Stephanie Carter, 21, both of Skowhegan, had gone to the East River Road home where Sipe is staying to pick up computer equipment and an argument started.
"The three ladies tried to leave," Emmons said. He said Harrington was in the driver's seat and the other two women were outside the car.
"And he lets a round go -- fires off a firearm -- it went right through the windshield of the car," Emmons said.
The car was a red 2002 Dodge passenger car registered to Todd Smart, Cornville, that Harrington had borrowed, the police chief said. Skowhegan police officers, a state police trooper, ambulance personnel and a domestic violence investigator from the district attorney's office also were sent to the scene Wednesday
Sipe is charged with aggravated reckless conduct with a firearm, a class B felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, according to a jail intake worker. He is charged additionally with criminal mischief.
Sipe is being held on $25,000 cash bail.
