NH sewage disks wash up on Maine beaches

YORK — Officials say that a few of the plastic disks that spilled from a New Hampshire sewage treatment plant have washed up on some Maine beaches over the weekend.

This photo from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services shows some of the millions of mesh disks that were released from the wastewater treatment plant in Hooksett, N.H., on March 6. The disks are about two inches in diameter.

Jim Martin of the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services says the disks showed up in Kittery and York. He tells the Portsmouth Herald it's the first sighting of the disks that far north.

Heavy rains caused millions of the bacteria-catching disks to leave the Hooksett Wastewater Treatment Plant on March 6. The disks spilled into the Merrimack River and traveled to the Atlantic Ocean.

They are not hazardous waste but it's recommended that people wear gloves when picking them up.

More disks have been found washing up along the coast of Massachusetts as far south as Cape Cod.
