SOUTH BERWICK —  A school bus carrying 23 summer campers collided with a car Tuesday afternoon, and the driver of the car had to be transported by ambulance to a Portsmouth hospital.

Katie Moore, a paramedic supervisor with the South Berwick Rescue Department, said the male driver, whose name and condition weren't immediately available, was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital in New Hampshire.

Moore said the school bus was transporting about 20 children between the ages of 12 and 16 when it was hit in the front end by a motor vehicle.

South Berwick Fire Chief George Gorman said when the crash took place, the bus was returning to Camp Yavneh – a residential Jewish camp in Northwood, N.H. – from a trip to York Beach.

Gorman said the front end of the bus suffered substantial damage but the car took the brunt of the collision. The car's driver was trapped inside the wreckage. Firefighters had to cut the roof off the car in order to remove him.

Several ambulance crews responded to the crash and checked on the children’s well-being, but none of the campers had to be transported to a hospital, she said.

The crash, which was reported around 4:30 p.m., took place on Route 236 near its intersection with Quarry Drive.
