Soldier with Maine ties killed in Afghanistan

A soldier with Maine ties has been killed in Afghanistan, Gov. John Baldacci's office said this morning.

Staff Sgt. Eric Shaw, 31, was killed on June 27 while serving with the 327th Infantry, First Brigade Combat Team. He was on his third combat tour and was based in Fort Campbell, Ky., Baldacci's office said.

Shaw was raised in Exeter by his father and paternal grandmother, Baldacci's office said. They are both deceased. His mother lives in Rhode Island.

Shaw’s wife was visiting her parents in Maine when she was notified of her husband’s death, the governor's office said. It did not provide the woman's name or hometown, but said the couple has three children, ages 5, 2 and six weeks, and lives in Tennessee.

“Staff Sergeant Shaw was a dedicated soldier with a young family. We will keep his wife and his children in our prayers," Baldacci said in a statement. "Our entire state mourns with them.”
 
Baldacci said he had placed a call to the family early today, and will try to speak with them again later today.

“We will provide whatever help and support we can during this terrible time,” Baldacci said.

The governor will order flags flown at half-staff on the day of Shaw’s funeral.
