Ex-Maine prosecutor to plead guilty to flight charges

By BETTY ADAMS Kennebec Journal

A federal judge agreed Thursday to postpone a Feb. 5 court date for the state's former top drug prosecutor so he can plead guilty to fleeing Maine after learning that most of his convictions on child pornography charges had been upheld.

James Cameron, 50, of Rome now is scheduled to be in court Feb. 19 to address a criminal contempt charge. He is expected to plead guilty, according to court documents filed by his attorney, David Beneman.

Cameron, who is being held in New Hampshire while the contempt charge is pending, was sentenced in March 2011 to 16 years in prison for 13 counts of possessing and transmitting child pornography.

He served about a year before being released on conditions, pending his appeal.

In November, the U.S. 1st Circuit Court of Appeals reversed convictions on six counts and sent the case back for resentencing on the remaining seven, or a new trial. On Nov. 15, Cameron cut his electronic monitoring bracelet and fled the state. He was arrested on Dec. 2 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The contempt charge stems from Cameron's violation of his bail conditions by fleeing.

The prosecutor's office has opted for resentencing on the remaining child pornography convictions against Cameron.
